Mustang Freestyle

The Ford Mustang Shelby is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang, built by Ford from 1968 through 1970. The 1965, 1966 and 1967 Shelbys' were a series of Ford Mustangs which were specially modified by Carroll Shelby's company and sold under the name Shelby GT with identification badges Shelby Cobra. From 1968 the model became the Shelby Cobra GT. The program was factory-sponsored by Ford to compete with the Corvette, also factory-sponsored by Chevrolet, neither of which could be built for the sales price charged. In 2007, following the introduction of the Fifth-generation Ford Mustang the Shelby nameplate was revived for new high performance versions of the Mustang.

Saleen Mustang S281 Extreme

Ryan is a young guy with a young family-he's a self-employed contractor who has aspirations to join his hometown fire department. He likes the economic security of a firefighting career -every financial decision he makes has to fall within practical family guidelines. Except for a 2006 Mustang Saleen S 281 Extreme...

Ryan spotted one on Autotrader.ca for an asking price of 14,500 Canadian. That's a fraction of retail (45-55,000) for a 5000-mile car. Ryan emailed the seller for more information. It was the old divorce story (vindictive, angry, motivated ex-wife equals fire sale). Or so it seemed.

Ryan isn't a naïve guy-he's seen the 20-20/Dateline car scam stories on TV so he paid 30 bucks for a CARFAX report-everything she told him checked out. The car was sold in California, repossessed with a few thousand miles on the clock, sold again, moved up to Vancouver BC Canada and eventually ended up in Edmonton Alberta Canada. This was exactly what she had told him. He asked for more pictures and she emailed a giant portfolio including pictures of the car with Alberta plates and the original California dealer sticker. So far so good.

The seller then set the hook by offering a solution to the "how do I get paid?" question-she offered the "eBay Payment Protection Plan" as a solution. Basically it worked this way: Ryan would send a certified payment to a holding account with a trust company that would keep the funds until both parties were satisfied. She emailed him an invoice (eBay logo and all) detailing the terms of the protection plan: she ships the car and no money exchanges hands for 10 days until buyer is satisfied. Seller also agrees to take the car back at seller's expense for shipping if it isn't satisfactory. From Ryan's point of view she was taking all the risk so, with CARFAX, Auto Trader and eBay apparently involved, he truly believed that he'd won the 'Specialty Mustang' lottery.

Until it didn't show up. She had emailed Ryan to expect delivery at his house on Monday night at 8 pm. 45 minutes went by. Then an hour. Then another hour.

Ryan finally got an answer after several emails when she told him that the car was held up due to a shipping insurance issue with her bank. That's when he threw the penalty flag and phoned her bank in Florida to crash the deal (bank transfer recall). The manager was very unwilling to help. He told Ryan that his customer told him that Ryan had indeed received the car and the believability edge had gone to his client. It took a big move up the food chain in this Florida based banking chain and a call from the Miami police to get this guy off his "protect the lowlife fraud artist" position.

Ryan also phoned eBay about the protection plan invoice. eBay told him that it didn't exist and they contacted IC3 (internet fraud investigation). The bank account was immediately frozen. Ryan's own city police service in Calgary Alberta told him that they see this about five times a week and it can involve anything from a car to heavy equipment and it's always done the same way.

Ryan's case was typical-they'd taken pictures from a legitimate ad (in this case, like most, the real owner had actually tried to sell it earlier this year), done the same CARFAX check, built a divorce story around it and offered this bogus protection plan. Had Ryan waited another hour the 10 days would have been up and he would have been out 15,000 hard-earned dollars.

The worst part about this scam is that even after Ryan phoned Auto Trader to tell them that this ad was fraudulent the same car turned up a week later on Autotrader.ca -3000 bucks cheaper and under a new e mail address. They pulled the ad right after Ryan phoned them again.

The old adage "if it's too good to be true... blah blah blah" clearly applies here but Ryan tried to be a cautious buyer and practice due diligence even with "buck" (or in this case) "mustang" fever. He relied on brand names like CARFAX, Auto Trader and eBay to protect him-and so did the crooks. None of the name brands technically did anything wrong but with any system there is weakness-predators exploit weakness.

Bottom line "caveat emptor"-sure it's an older than dirt expression but living in the 21st century doesn't excuse us from learning an old lesson. Ask Ryan.

It's fun, it's occasionally controversial and it draws women into the site-we're like an automotive beer commercial so we need the women in the picture to make it interesting.

But we're still going to talk about 57 Chevys and vintage Mustangs.

New Ford Mustang gets the virtual Mach 1 treatment

Few Mustang variants are as legendary or desirable as the classic Mach 1. Introduced in 1969 as a high-performance package to slot below the range-topping models from Shelby, the Mach 1 was the every-man's Mustang, and after the pony car lost its way in the late '70s, the Mach 1 wasn't seen again until 2003, when Ford reintroduced the package as the top performing 'Stang this side of the GT500.

Ford Mustang-1Ford Mustang-2We already know there's no Mach 1 for the 2010 model year, but there's at least a little speculation that the historic moniker could be revived for 2011, coinciding with the expected launch of Ford's latest 5.0-liter 400-horsepower Coyote V8 engine. What better excuse could there be for a performance edition? Fortunately for us, Edmundo Cano put mouse to Photoshop and created an enticing rendering of what a factory 2011 Mach 1 might look like.

We're particularly fond of the flat black paint running down the center of the Mustang's hood, which now features the obligatory shaker scoop. Similarly blacked-out 20-inch Torq-Thrust-style wheels look the part, and the whole package is rounded out with Hugger Orange paint and Mach 1 graphics package. We wholeheartedly approve and can't wait to see what Ford has in store in 2011.

2010 Roush Mustang 427R

Recession? Global Warming? Future gas-price worries? Bah. This is turning out to be some sort of National Musclecar Month (stay tuned for more Camaro/Mustang/Challenger news coming very soon), and Jack Roush is striking while the iron is hot. Today, Roush Performance unveiled its fifth-generation Mustang performance car, the 2010 427R, at its Livonia, Michigan, factory in suburban Detroit.

2010 Roush Mustang 427R-12010 Roush Mustang 427R-2As before, the Roush Performance 427R package includes enhanced styling, suspension, and engine-performance upgrades. In terms of styling, the front and rear fascias are more aggressively sculpted, with a jutting front splitter and simulated venturi air exhausters in back. Side skirt and louvered quarter windows, chromed 18-in. Roush wheels, a three-piece rear spoiler, and badging inside and out complete the package (which will be offered by itself as a Stage I package for $6852).

Chassis upgrades revised spring and damper rates, new anti-roll bars, revised rear-suspension geometry to combat wheelhop (using unique upper trailing links, mounting brackets, and bushings), new jounce bumpers and bushings. (An $8226 Stage II package will buy the appearance and chassis mods.) The 427R stripes and decals accompany a revised Roots-type supercharger and intercooler plus other powertrain upgrades that bring the stock 4.6L SOHC three-valve motor up to 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. And what's more, they do so WITHOUT incurring a gas-guzzler penalty as the 2009 427R did. That savings helps bring the 427R package price in at just $15,056 ($43,071 out the door, including the base Mustang GT).

How did they manage to improve performance while trimming overall emissions by 38% and boosting fuel economy by about 10% (firm numbers are not yet available but there will be no guzzler tax)? According to powertrain honcho Erin Dmytrow, more efficient breathing and intercooling are key. The base car's cold-air induction (breathing from ahead of all the heat exchangers) is retained, opening into a freer-flowing air box and intake manifold.

And while the previous intercooler radiator was of a double-core design down in the lower fascia opening, the new one uses a single core that's nearly the same height as the engine radiator. Overall coolant capacity for the dedicated intercooler circuit is up over 25%, and charge-air temperatures are said to be dramatically lower. The supercharger is a 1.5L Roots-type using the familiar three-lobe impellers to develop 5.5psi max boost (any more wouldn't be safe without reducing the stock engine's compression ratio).

Ford will release new supercar 2010 - Ford Shelby GT500

Supercar Ford GT500 is mechanically an evolution of the previous model.Ford used the current-gen Bullitt model as the starting point for the 2010 Mustang GT, the lessons learned from developing the limited edition GT500 KR fed directly into the latest Shelby-badged variant. Output of the supercharged 5.4L V8 has now been cranked up to 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and the handling is claimed to be better than before.

Compare with the old GT500, this new supercar model gets more aggressive styling, particularly in the nose, and reprises many of the same detail elements. The horizontally mirrored trapezoidal shape of the grille in the upper and lower front fascia is meant to echo the oval shape of the Shelby Cobras of the '60s. The upper grille is tilted forward at a steeper angle than the GT and the grille surround is separated entirely from the hood. The hood of the GT500 still has a functional air extractor allowing some of the massive heat generated by the blown V8 to escape.

The engine for this supercar is still a twin cam 5.4L V8 with a supercharger. The updates bump output from from 500 hp at 6,000 rpm to 540 hp at 6,200 rpm. Twisting force also goes from 480 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm to 510 lb-ft at the same peak speed. The iron block from the F-150 was used with the top end of the GT engine, which pushed the car's weight up over 3,900 lbs.

The top two ratios in the new GT500's gearbox have been made numerically lower. The clutch plates for supercar GT500 have been increased in diameter from 215 mm to 250 mm. All that torque flows from the Tremec 6-speed gearbox through a limited slip differential with a 3.55:1 final drive ratio. The 2010 GT500 gets 17% stiffer springs at the front axle and 7% stiffer at the rear axle.
